2002 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD TO BUCHER

WINCHESTER, VA – 2/25 - Seventeen year old Matt Bucher of Winchester has been selected as the outstanding 2002 rookie in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge at the Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Virginia.

The rookie of the year award is based on several criteria including; individual race results, point standings, sportsmanship on and off the track and a final recommendation by Old Dominion Speedway promoter Dick Gore.

"It has been great year." Bucher said, "Even when we struggled as a small team with accidents and an ill handling race car, we fought back. That is important to me as a rookie competitor."

For the 2003 season Bucher will have a new stock car and will set his sights even higher as he tries to reach victory lane and capture the track championship.

Old Dominion Speedway is a NASCAR sanctioned 3/8ths mile asphalt speedway in Manassas, Virginia. The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge is the premiere division at the speedway; it is the main feeder series for NASCAR’s Touring Divisions.

MATT BUCHER LOOKING FORWARD TO SOPHOMORE YEAR

Having a hobby in high school while trying to maintain your grade average to be high enough to graduate is a chore in itself, but also having a hobby such as maintaining a late model stock car in your evening hours and piloting the car on Saturday evening at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Va. is no small chore. As a matter of fact it is a big deal. But Matt Bucher of Winchester, Va. does just that.

To gain experience on the mechanics and handling of a late model stock car, Matt helped his close friend and now fellow competitor, Mark McFarland , the last few years, before joining the ranks of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge as a driver at the age of sixteen.

Receiving help from his Dad and sponsors; Action Concrete Supply Company, Bob’s Used Cars, Dominion Motors, ICI Auto Color, B&G Towing, Orbit Construction Company, Matt was ready to hit the high banks at Old Dominion Speedway in 2002.

In 2002 Matt Bucher competed in his rookie year in a late model stock car in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Va. O.D.S. is the closest Nascar sanction track to his home in Winchester Va.. Most people start out in a lesser division and gain experience and in about two years move up to the late model stock cars. But Dennis Bucher, Matt’s dad and crew chief thought with Matt’s experience in go karts , he was ready for this advance class of stock cars. Matt found great success in the karting world with many local and state wins plus numerous state championships. Matt competed in all but 3 races this year and finished 15th in the points battle. Hopefully Matt will win the rookie of the year honors. As of November 30, the Old Dominion Speedway is still in the process of determining the Rookie of the Year Award. The final decision is decided by O.D.S. promoter Dick Gore. Who will win the award will be announced at the O.D.S.
awards banquet on February 1st, 2003. It was a very competitive season for the Rookie of the year in the late model division .

Matt earned the respect of his competitors, track officials and staff and the fan alike.

For the 2003 season Matt and his Dad are preparing a complete new chassis for a run at the track championship. Along with the new stock car and his experience from 2002, Matt feels he can capture a couple of victories along the way.
