Four wins at Atlanta race for Goodyear-shod drag racers

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 13, 2013) – Super Gas driver Billy Upton picked up his third NHRA national event victory and three other racers driving on Goodyear tires collected wins in the rain-delayed Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

The event was stopped a week earlier by persistent rains. Qualifying was completed one day and eliminations completed the race.

Upton’s victory came in the NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsmen teams. His reaction time, just .013 of a second, was the key to his victory.

Antron Brown (in Top Fuel), Johnny Gray (Funny Car) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) all won in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series for professionals.

Brown beat Brandon Bernstein, taking his second win in 2013 and his 23rd in the Top Fuel category. Brown’s winning pass was a zippy 3.801 seconds and 321.35 mph. The win moved Brown to within five points of Top Fuel points leader Tony Schumacher. Schumacher’s edge is 564-559.

Hagan left the starting line slightly quicker than did Gray but Gray drew even by the 330-foot mark and drew away over the remaining distance. His margin of victory was .066 of a second. By advancing to the finals, Hagan drew closer to category leader Cruz Pedregon in the championship standings. Pedregon leads 547-534.

Edwards’ victory left him with the most points in all of the NHRA’s professional categories. He beat Shane Gray in the Atlanta final, despite Gray’s near-perfect reaction time, .001 of a second. Edwards caught Gray before the mid-track and pulled away. Trackside observers estimated the margin of victory to be seven feet. Edwards leads the Pro Stock drivers with 656 points. Jeg Coughlin Jr. is next with 530.

STOCKTON, Calif. (May 6, 2013) – Derek Thorn started up front and knew what to do from there. He led every lap and won the G-Oil 150 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Stockton 99 Speedway.

The win was Thorn’s third in the West series.

Thorn, with 88 points, leads the championship race. Hayley is next with 84.
