Mt Lawn adjusts racing schedule

Mt Lawn Speedway located west of New Castle is going to take two weeks off starting Saturday June 29 in order to survey race teams to determine the best dates for future races. According to track owner Rick Sweigart, “We have suffered from low car counts in all divisions this year some divisions are worse than others. We are going to take a couple of weeks off from our weekly show and with the help of drivers and owners we will survey our race teams so we can plan future race dates to maximize car counts.” Sweigart is hopeful that the time off will allow competitors time to finish cars that are in the process of being built that will give us the opportunity to have sufficient car counts to put on a good show. The Raintree 100 originally scheduled for July 6 will be rescheduled to a later date in the summer. Check the Mt Lawn website for an updated schedule.

20, 20, 10 format successful at Mt Lawn

The revised format for the annual running of the May 5-0 at Mt Lawn Speedway proved to be a success with drivers and fans. The twenty-twenty-ten format was the idea of long time Mt Lawn driver LJ Lines of Lewisville. The two twenty lap races were used to set the starting lineup for the ten lap finale.

In the first race of the evening Brandon Mefford of Spiceland took the lead on lap one and led the first four laps for the Van Hoy Oil Late Models. Jason Thompson of Shirley competing in his own car for the first time in 2013 took over on lap five and led the rest of the way. Mefford held off Scott Knepley of Spiceland for second. Following Knepley were Brock Anderson of Albany, Kent Carson of Richmond, Chris Bolyard of Rushville, Jason O’Neal of Shirley and Bill Pierce Jr. of New Castle.

The first twenty for the Van Hoy Oil Thunder Cars went to Trent Gossar of Markleville who led all twenty laps for the win. Second went to Trent’s father Tom also of Markleville followed by Johnny Magee of Carthage, David McConnell of Shirley, Tony Stewart of Straughn, Bill Clark of Rushville and Eric Evans of Greenfield. Evans dropped out of the race on lap 12 with a flat tire.

Twenty one Van Hoy Oil Hornets were scheduled to start the first twenty lap event with Terry Neal of New Castle, Woody Jennings of Richmond and Brad Brooks of Indianapolis unable to start. On the first lap of the affair Eric Willey of Morristown lost control of his automobile and slid across the track collecting several cars. When the dust cleared Willey, Adam Lee of New Castle, Nick Warner of Anderson and Joseph Jennings of Richmond were all wrecked and unable to continue. Rayce Sayer of Greenfield led the first four laps giving way to Randy Owens of Anderson. Owens was passed by Nick Pollitt of New Castle on lap eight. Pollitt led the rest of the way for the win. Pollitt was followed by Larry Hughes Jr. of Greensboro, Lenny Tungate of New Castle, Mark Jennings of Richmond and Chris Jennings of Richmond to round out the top five.

In the second Late Model twenty Mefford led wire to wire for the win followed by Anderson, Knepley, Carson, Pierce, Jacob Wyman of Selma, Thompson, Bolyard and O’Neal. Thompson went a lap down when he had to pit with fuel related issues.

In the second Thunder Car twenty by finishing last in the first twenty Evans started on the pole and led the entire race for the win. Tom Gossar was second followed by Trent Gossar, Stewart, Clark, McConnell and Magee.

The second Hornet twenty went to Taylor Wyman of Selma. Wyman got the lead on lap four from Joseph Jennings. Hughes didn’t make it easy for Wyman as he closed quickly coming the checkered flag and had the inside lane in the short turn. Wyman was able to come out of a three wide situation on the final lap to hold on for the win. Hughes finished second followed by Chris Jennings, Pollitt and Jared Kelley of Anderson to round out the top five.

Rain started falling just as the Late Models were taking to the track for their ten lap race for all the money. After a thirty minute delay the Late Models pulled off the track and the Hornets took the green flag. Hughes who started on the pole by virtue of his two second in the twenty lap prelims led all ten laps for the win. Pollitt was a close second followed by Wyman, Chris Jennings, John Massengale of New Castle, Rodney Sutton of New Castle, Joseph Jennings, Keller, Neal and Owens.

Next came the Thunder Cars for their ten lapper with Trent Gossar starting on the pole. Trent appeared to be on his was to victory as he led nine and three quarters laps. Evans however had other ideas and was able to sneak under Gossar entering the short turn coming to the checker. Trent finished second followed by Tom, Magee, Stewart and Clark. McConnell did not start the final race.

In the Late Model final Mefford started on the pole with Knepley along side. Mefford and Knepley battled side by side for the first lap with Mefford leading at the line. Thompson passed both Mefford and Knepley on lap two and went on the win. Mefford was second followed by Knepley, Anderson, Carson, Pierce, Wyman and Bolyard.

Brian Reddman driving a 2005 Monte Carlo won the Street Drags.
