Pedal Pushers Rule at Owosso!
Ovid Mi- 8/12/06 - Marie Smith and Chris Kioski put in countless hours and
energy to put smiles on the faces of more than 60 children at the Owosso
Speedway last Saturday with the second annual bicycle giveaway. Many generous
racers, fans and businesses gave money to support the bicycle giveaway project
and allowed the recipients to ride away in style. Twenty-plus children also
participated in the bicycle racing which took part on the front stretch of the
3/8ths mile speedway. Dustin, Ricky and Shyann Whitaker were the first, second
and third place finishers in the 1-6 year old race. Cody Dorman, Ashley Haas and
Jonah Poole were the first, second and third place finishers in the 7-9 year old
race. Derick, Codie Naylor and Michael Jameson were the finishers in the 10-12
year old race. A very enthusiastic crowd cheered on the racers and encouraged
their efforts.
The first stock car feature event put the Main Bar Dirt Enduro Figure 8 racers
on the track. Twenty-one cars battled for the 10 starting positions in the
feature event through three qualifying heats. Fowlerville native, Kevin
Morrison, found Victory Lane first as the evening darkness settled on the track.
Veteran figure 8 campaigners, Jim Duke and Bill Lanville were more than exciting
in their attempts to capture the checkered flag. Potential fires brought out the
red flag twice during the 15-lap feature. The dirt enduro figure 8 racers return
to action on September 2nd.
Lindsey Fausett found Victory Lane for the second time this year in the Nelson
Collision Street Stock 25-lap feature event. It took her two laps to gain the
lead from her fourth starting position. Matt Puskarich and Jim Dorman would
hound her for the next 23 laps as Fausett used the high side of the track to her
advantage. Bruce Dunton Jr came from the ninth spot to race with the leaders and
pole sitter John Forsythe III stayed in the hunt as well. The second caution
bunched the field and made a green, white, checkered flag finish a nail biter.
Puskarich couldn’t make the pass low and finished second. Dorman placed third,
Dunton was fourth and Forsythe III was fifth. The street stocks are back in
action this Saturday, August 19th.
The Priority Auto Body Super Late Models went caution free after the flag waved
on lap #2. Bill Heeney Jr, Scott Pemberton and Chad Finley diced back and forth
for the first few laps until Dan Krzywosinski took charge on lap #5.
Krzywosinski led it for the next 6 laps before Jason Felver dove to the inside
in turn 3 and led it at the stripe. Felver never looked back and took it the
distance for the win. It was the first of the season for the 30-year old Owosso
native. Krzywosinski was second, Jon McNett came from seventh to finish 3rd,
Brian Huntley took home fourth and Scott Pemberton finished fifth. The super
late models return to action on August 26th for the first annual Owosso 100
Super Late Model event.
The Wakeland Oil Pure Stocks raced caution free for 19 of their 20-lap feature
event. The final lap brought out a yellow flag, which bunched the field for the
final last lap mad dash to the finish. Ed Chapman III looked to have things well
in hand as he took the lead on lap #3 and was pulling away. Fabian Frary was
having no luck running down the leader and back in the pack the racing was
fierce as Michael Burkley, Bill Adkins and Ricky Moore battled. The restart with
one to go changed everything as Frary had a clear shot at making the pass.
Chapman held him off to win for the second time ever in his racing career.
Adkins finished third, Burkley was fourth and Moore was fifth. The pure stocks
will continue their battle this Saturday, August 19th.
Dave Bigos led the Bigos Precast Late Models to the green flag for their 30-lap
feature event and would lead for the first 17 laps as well. Mark Welch would get
by the leader and show the way for the rest of the field over the next 13 laps
to notch his fourth victory of the season and his second in a row. Ron Hauser
started on the outside pole and would not give up much ground on his way to his
career best finish of third place. John Buckner Jr and Jimmy O’Smith were side
by side with Mark Pettit for most of the race that was slowed by just two
cautions. Bigos would take home the second place prize, Hauser was third, O’Smith
was fourth and Buckner was fifth. The late models return to action next week
along with the Young Chevrolet Cadillac Modifieds and the Big O Four Wide Mini
Stocks. Be sure to stay abreast of all the racing news and action by visiting
