Hilltop Weathers Open Practice

Millersburg, OH - April 1, 2007 - About 40 racers took advantage of a break in the rain clouds to test their cars and turn the first laps of the 2007 racing season at Hilltop Speedway in scenic Holmes County. It was unfortunate rains during the night soaked the grounds but speedway officials were quick to bulldoze the muck to the side and assist with parking.

Many race fans also took advantage of this opportunity to not only catch a sneak preview of the new race cars but to also check on the progress being made on the new grandstands which is rapidly nearing completion.

A variety of dirt racers were on hand including the # 14 Super Late Model owned and driven by second generation racer J. R. Gentry of Wooster. A strong competitor at Hilltop in 2006 Gentry finished the season with a fourth place in overall season points and looks to improve on that position this year. Another second generation driver who turned some very impressive laps behind the wheel of a winged outlaw sprint car was 16 year old Cole Duncan, son of legendary sprint ace Rodney Duncan. Cole has been busy making a name for himself behind the wheel of ¼ Midgets and is ready to make a big step up to Sprints. This was not only a special occasion for the Duncan’s, but a rare treat for race fans to witness up and coming talent!

Defending Modified track champion Kevin Morehouse was only a spectator to this Sunday afternoon practice after destroying a brand new race car just the night before at another popular dirt track. Morehouse escaped unharmed from the accident which was due to mechanical failure and must now prepare his back up car for action. David Hittle, Allan Baker, and Jeff Staggers did have their open wheeled modifieds on hand and turned in some very fast times around the tacky but somewhat rough 1/3 mile race track. In the pure stocks, Donna Gentry found a little too much bite in the surface and her session ended with a twisted drive shaft. Repairs will be made in time for next weeks season opener and will join fellow racers Jeff Facemire and Keith Tish for competition.

A hometown favorite from Millersburg, Dale Beckett Jr. brought two of his mini stocks for testing. Beckett has won numerous feature wins and championships behind the wheel of Ford Escorts, this afternoon also brought along a race prepared Honda for competition. A new and welcome addition to the race night lineup at Hilltop is Mod Lights. These half scale, motorcycle engine powered race cars are lightening quick and pack a lot of excitement for the budget racer and a small group were in attendance today.

Hilltop Speedway races every Friday night and is located 3 miles South of Millersburg Ohio. The regular season begins with a regular show on April 6, followed by the premier of the Independent Race Series featuring Super Late Models on April 13. This is a major event for Hilltop Speedway and the $5,000 first place prize money is sure to attract this regions best competition.
