CHRIS “THE KID” NEUENSCHWANDER TAKES USA ANGOLA RACE 08-06-05…Angola IN…USA Rookies continue to surprise fellow competitors on the USA Modified Series. Earlier this season rookie Scotty Tomasik won the USA race at Anderson Speedway, Anderson IN. Saturday night at Angola Speedway lighting struck the USA veterans again in the form of Rookie Chris “The Kid” Neuenschwander. It was the first trip for the USA Modified Series to Angola Speedway in ’05 after an earlier attempt was rained out. Nearly thirty Modifieds packed the pits with Angola’s regular divisions of Super Lates, Mini stocks, and Sportsman. Practice saw USA regulars Harold Scott, Gary Bedell, and Brent Hook all fast along with part time, and former USA Champion competitor Jason Dietsch debuting new Howe modified. Qualifying saw a fast time of 14.928 (90.434MPH) set by Jason Dietsch, Gary Bedell was second fast with a 14.934, Brent Hook at 14.940 was third and Chris Neuenschwander fourth with a 14.949. In preliminary events it was Fort Wayne’s Bud Adams taking the dash over Jason Dietsch. Heat race winners were Harold Scott over Jeremy Wallen and Mark Harrison, and Cory Setser over Mike Hadley and Dave Wise. The feature had Jeremy Wallen on the pole with Mark Harrison second, Harold Scott third, Bud Adams fourth, Chad Poorman in the fifth spot and Chris “The Kid” Neuenschwander in sixth. At the green it was Jeremy getting the jump on Mark Harrison, as Mark fell in behind Jeremy. Bud Adams got a strong run on the outside...just shy of clearing Mark… the two made contact…the result was Mark Harrison on top of Bud and the rest of the field spinning to avoid each other. As the yellow came out it would be a complete re-start. With all being able to continue the next restart would prove to be better. Jeremy maintained the lead with Mark Harrison second, Harold Scott, Bud Adams, Chad Poorman, and Chris Neuenschwander. Poorman had problems and started to fall back as Chris started his march to the front. By lap 10 Harold Scott had worked his way around Wallen and looked to be in good shape for his second win of the season. But by now Chris had disposed of Mark Harrison, fighting a toe problem from the first start, and was working on Adams and Wallen. By lap 25 Chris was challenging Scott for the lead. With the patience of a veteran, Chris continued to work Scott until he finally got his nose far enough under Scott to challenge for the lead. The two battled for the lead two laps, before “The Kid” finally took the point. On lap 40 Steve Minich Jr’s motor exploded going into turn one causing spinning cars and a red flag for track clean up. As the field closed for the restart Chris “The Kid” blazed to his first USA Modified Series win. Harold Scott finished second, Bud Adams third, and Jeff Lane fourth in an outstanding from the 16th spot. The USA Modifieds Series is off for two weeks and will continue it’s Championship run on August 27th at Mansfield Speedway, Ohio. For more info see www.usamodifieds.com or www.mansfield-speedway.com
WALLEN WINS NAPA 50 08/05/05…Ft. Wayne IN…Jeremy Wallen from Ft. Wayne, Indiana captured the NAPA 50 at Baer Field Speedway August 5th before a stellar “International Night” crowd. Jeremy, along with Baer Field Speedway regulars, Bud Adams, and George Perkins proved to be too tuff for the USA modified drivers as they finished one, two, and three. Thirty cars were on hand for the NAPA 50 held in conjunctions with the ASA Late Model Series. Qualifying saw Jeremy Wallen set fast time with a blistering 18.317 lap around the half mile oval. Bud Adams was second with a lap of 18.333 with Michigan’s Brent Hook third at 18.371. With qualifying completed pre-race events got under way. A parade of bright, new and vintage International trucks circled the track in a display of quality design, engineering, and production. First on the USA Modified Series race card was the dash that was won by Jeff Lane of Knightstown IN. Baer Field veteran George Perkins won the first heat, with Indianapolis, IN driver Mark Harrison, back from a tangle with the IRP catch fence last week, the second. The line up for the NAPA 50 saw Steve Minich Jr. on the pole with Kalamazoo native Brent Hook outside. Bud Adams, George Perkins, Jeremy Wallen, Jeff Lane, Cory Setser, Jeff Weston, Damon Breedlove, and Brad Springer, also back from a devastating IRP crash, rounded out the top ten starting lineup. At the drop of the green from USA flagman “Chicken Little” it was Steve Minick leading with Bud Adams, and George Perkins disposing of Brent Hook early, Jeremy Wallen and Jeff Lane. As the race wore on… with a minor yellow flag for a spinning race car, it look as though the Baer Field regulars would dominate the USA show with now the top four, Adams, Wallen, Perkins, and Minich. With five to go Wallen had taken over the top spot and Steve Minch faded to sixth, leaving Bud Adams second, George Perkins third and Jeff Lane, Brent Hook finishing there after. It was Jeremy Wallen’s first USA Tour win. The USA Modified Series will run Angola Motor Speedway Saturday, for more info contact www.usamodifieds.com or www.angolamotorspeedway.com
