Minster, Engleking, Brey, Luedke, & Jensema Opening Night Winners @ EWSC
by J Tienor
May 24, 2013 Manitowoc, WI – After 3 weeks of weather related cancellations and rain the day before, Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars finally got opening night of 2013 in the books. A super fast and wide race track provided plenty of action-packed competition in the feature events.
Chris Gilson and Jason Parrish made up the front row, followed by Adam Broehm, Keving Lubach, Nick Strobbe, and Donny Kulow. An awkward start created a melee in the first turn of the feature, involving half the field and leading to the retirement of Brian Gilles, Gilson, and Parrish before a lap had been completed, while Matt Jackson, Kevin Naidl, Chad Ninmer, and Steven Ruh sustained damage but rejoined the action.
Broehm led the first lap with Strobbe, Lubach, Kulow, and Jackson rounding out the top 5. Lubach moved to second by Lap 3, and to the lead by Lap 4, while Ruh withdrew due to the earlier damage. Over the next lap Jackson jumped from 4th to the lead, getting around Strobbe, Broehm, and Lubach. Ryan Minster was working through the field and slid into 2nd behind Jackson at Lap 7. The final caution involved the rides of Donny Kulow, Ninmer, and Strobbe, with Kulow ducking in the pits but returning for the final 2 laps. Naidl was also black-flagged for a mechanical issue as earlier damage became worse with major roll cage damage becoming a safety issue. The massive attrition in this event left 5 cars running at the finish, with Minster taking the win while Jackson, Lubach, Broehm, and Kulow rounded out the top 5. Hard Charger to Jackson picking up 10 spots and Minster with 7.

The 360 Sprinters were pushed onto the track, ready to put on a show for the fans. Tim Haddy and Al Schlafer made up the front row, Jeff Wilke, TJ Luedke, Randy Sippel and Kyle Marten rounded out the top 3 rows. Haddy jumped out to the first lap lead, with Luedke pushing him hard from his 4th starting position. Danny Schlafer, Scotty Neitzel, and 2012 Champion Ben Schmidt charged hard from deep in the field to battle Haddy & Luedke at the front by Lap 11. As the quintet of leaders entered lapped traffic around the midway point things at the front started to change rapidly as they ran 3 and even 4 wide at times. Neitzel slid past Danny, Haddy and Luedke to grab the lead at Lap 18. Three laps later it was Luedke bringing along Haddy, both of them getting around Neitzel in the 10W to take the top 2 spots. A lap later it was Haddy back at the top with Neitzel in his wake. Neitzel again claimed the top a lap later as the top 3 played a high speed game of “top this”. Luedke proved himself up to the challenge as he swung around the 21H and 10W one more time to take the lead with 5 to go. He held the spot the final 5 laps as the battle raged behind him, with Haddy, Neitzel, Schmidt, Marten, and Danny Schlafer rounding out the top 6. With Rick Scheffler and Justin Schmidt leading 6 others joining the back of the Late Model field from the B-Main, Mark Rose and Justin Hirt led the group to the start. Rose led the first lap, getting a great jump on the rest of the drivers, with Todd Jensema getting an even better start from forth pressuring Rose immediately. Jensema finally got the best of Rose taking the lead on Lap 4, while 2012 Champion Russ Scheffler made the pass on Rose and chased down Jensema. A slip by Jensema allowed Scheffler to shoot by and Tom Naeyaert move in position to challenge the former leader. Lap 11 produced the first caution as TJ Dolhoun lost a driveshaft and was driven over by Ron Stroika who had nowhere to go. Russ led the field to the restart, followed by Jensema, Rose, Hirt, and Naeyaert. Scheffler and Jensema put on a show at the front, with Naeyaert lurking in their tire tracks, waiting for a slip up by either driver. Caution flew twice at Lap 20, first for an incident involving Rose and Tim Buhler, sending them both to the rear of the field, then on the following restart as Justin Schmidt looped his mount in traffic. The final restart showed Russ up front, Jensema, Naeyaert, Rick Scheffler, and Hirt. Jensema put a great move on Sheffler at 2 to go and held him off to taking opening night honors.
