A Pair of Historic Half-Miles for Kraig Kinser this Weekend at Jackson & Knoxville
By Kraig Kinser Racing PR

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—June 12, 2013— When it comes to historic half-mile dirt tracks in the Upper Midwest, two venues quickly come to mind — Knoxville Raceway in Iowa and Jackson Speedway in Minnesota. Kraig Kinser knows both tracks very well and has had success at each during his career with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series. He’ll return to the pair of tradition-laden venues this weekend as series opens a four-race stretch in the Upper Midwest.

Kinser will take to the track at Jackson Speedway on Friday, June 14, for the Eyecon Trail Cameras Presents the Big Game Shootout, followed by his second visit of the season to Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, June 15 for the Mediacom Shootout. Each event will encompass a full racing program, capped with $10,000-to-win features.

The native of Bloomington, Ind., has made three starts in his career Jackson Speedway. He made his debut at the half-mile in 2004, finishing second, after starting on the pole. He most recently raced at the track in 2010, finishing 11th. Kinser, who has made one start in the state of Minnesota already this year, finishing 15th at Elko Speedway, has one career win in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” with that coming in 2008 in his first-ever start at North Central Speedway in Brainerd.

“A lot has changed since the last time we raced at Jackson, so that should put everyone on a pretty equal playing field,” said Kinser. “That’s one of those places where track position is pretty important, especially being in clean air with the speeds you reach there. We’ve been working hard on our qualifying package this week and hopefully we can time in near the front and start up front in a heat and work our way into the dash.”

Last month at Knoxville, Kinser finished 13th, after lining up 21st. He was 26th-fastest in time trials with a season-high 51 cars in attendance. He finished fourth in the first heat race to transfer to the main event. The third-generation driver has two career wins at Knoxville, with both of those coming in 2005, including claiming the Knoxville Nationals that year.

“Knoxville was very racy last time we were there,” he noted. “We made up quite a few spots in the feature and so did a few other guys. We had the car working pretty good in the feature and we able to move around. There will probably be quite a few cars there again this time, so that will put a premium on qualifying, and that really seems to be the case just about every race nowadays.”

In his career with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at Knoxville, Kinser has made a total of 29 main event starts, including preliminary features. He has a pair of wins to go along with 11 top-10 finishes, of which six are top-five showings. Kinser made his debut at the half-mile with the World of Outlaws in 2001.

With 31 races in the books this season, Kinser is currently 11th in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings. He has one win, along with 14 top-10 finishes, with four of those being top-five performances.

“It was good to get three races in last week and to have a little extra time to work on stuff this week doesn’t hurt either,” Kinser stated. “The next couple weeks we’ll just have weekend races and as a driver those are the week’s that can be the toughest, as you want to be out there racing every night. We’ll make the most of the time between the races and keep tweaking things.”

Kraig Kinser Racing would like to thank Casey’s General Stores, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Maxim, Aerodine Composites, Sander Engineering, Integra Shocks, All Star Performance, FK Rod Ends, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, Bell, KSE Racing Products, ButlerBuilt, Schoenfeld Headers, Donovan Engineering, Fel-Pro, Brodix, Wilwood, Dyer’s, Barnes Systems, Ringer Gloves, Jakes Custom Golf Carts, and Ben Cook Racing Limited for their continued support.

A Consistent Weekend for Kraig Kinser at Knoxville & Elko
By Kraig Kinser Racing PR

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—May 12, 2013— Kraig Kinser’s main goal this past weekend at Knoxville Raceway and Elko Speedway was to solidly make the feature each night, complete all the laps and come away with two respectable finishes to make up for a tough weekend at Eldora the previous one. He was able to accomplish this as he finished 15th or better both nights, including gaining eight spots in the main event to come home 13th at Knoxville on Saturday night against the largest field of cars assembled all season.

Kinser lined up 21st at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa, on Saturday, May 11, and used a trio of yellow and red flags to methodically work his way forward in an attrition-filled race. The third-generation driver gained a spot at the drop of the green flag of the 25-lap main event and had moved up four positions, just four laps into the race. The first red flag was displayed on the sixth lap, at which point, Kinser found himself in 16th. He would run near that spot for the next 13 laps and used a strong restart following a lap-19 red flag to move into 15th. The native of Bloomington, Ind., would gain two more spots in the late going to cross the line 13th in the Casey’s General Store/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim.

“We are getting closer to where we need to be, but are still not quite there yet,” said Kinser. “The competition is just so tough right now with the Outlaws that if you are just a little bit off you are scratching and clawing to make the feature. Looking at the field at Knoxville, it was about half the Knoxville Nationals field there, so that was about as tough as it gets for an early season event at that track.”

The 2005 winner of the Knoxville Nationals opened the night by turning the 26th-fastest lap in time trials with a season-high 51 cars in attendance. Kinser lined up sixth in the first eight-lap heat race, with just the top-four finishers transferring to the A-Feature as a five heat race program was in effect. The third-generation driver got by current series point leader Daryn Pittman and Ian Madsen to finish fourth in the heat race and earn a spot in the 25-lap A-Feature.

Kinser opened the weekend on Friday, May 11 in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series debut at Elko Speedway in Minnesota. The paved three-eighths-mile was covered with dirt and hosted a very strong field of 34 cars and a huge crowd. Kinser was 11th-fastest in time trials and finished third in the third 10-lap heat race to earn a spot in the 40-lap main event. He lined up 16th on a very technical race track and ended up crossing the finish line in 15th, after the race was interrupted by rain on lap-34, which cut the feature short.

“Elko was very unique and a pretty tricky track and you really had to hit your marks,” he shared. “It was great to see such a big crowd and it was unfortunate the rain came there at the end. We might have been able to gain a few more spots if we would have had that last restart, but you never know. The main thing is we were able to complete all the laps and roll the car on the trailer in one piece.”

Next up for the third-generation driver is the first East Coast Swing of the season for the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series. Five races in seven nights await Kinser and his fellow competitors with three of those races in the sprint car hotbed of Central Pennsylvania. Kinser will enter that stretch of races 12th in the series standings, with eight top-10 finishes thus far in 2013.

“Going to Central Pennsylvania is always a challenge,” noted Kinser. “The guys out there are some of the toughest we face all season and you really have to be on your game, especially in qualifying. Where you time in and start in a heat race can really make or break your whole night. We’ll give it everything we have and hopefully come away with some good finishes.”

Kraig Kinser Racing would like to thank Casey’s General Stores, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Maxim, Aerodine Composites, Sander Engineering, Integra Shocks, All Star Performance, FK Rod Ends, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, Bell, KSE Racing Products, ButlerBuilt, Schoenfeld Headers, Donovan Engineering, Fel-Pro, Brodix, Wilwood, Dyer’s, Barnes Systems, Ringer Gloves, Jakes Custom Golf Carts, and Ben Cook Racing Limited for their continued support.

Schatz Continues Mastery of World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Iowa - May 11, 2013 - If it wasn't obvious before, Donny Schatz made it clear on Saturday night: The path to winning at Knoxville Raceway goes through him.

Schatz charged from seventh to victory in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Mediacom Shootout at the famous half-mile, where he has won five of the past six Knoxville Nationals crowns in addition to winning six additional series races there since 2006.

In a field of 51 cars, it was Brian Brown, Craig Dollansky and Tim Kaeding who tried to prevent Schatz from returning to Knoxville's victory lane, a place Schatz practically calls home. Brown earned his second pole of the season and jumped out to a quick lead before Dollansky was able to slide into the top spot on lap 9. Meanwhile, Schatz reeled in Kaeding, then Brown and set his sights on Dollansky.

On lap 18, Schatz stalked Dollansky through lapped traffic in his STP/Armor All J&J, finally making his move on the exit of turn two as they headed down the backstretch. A red flag for Rager Phillips in turn four forced a restart, and a multi-car crash on the frontstretch led to another, helping Schatz secure his advantage. Schatz then pulled away over the waning laps, leaving Dollansky and Brown to battle for second, which Dollansky took in the Eyecon Trail Cameras Maxim. Kerry Madsen and Paul McMahan went side-by-side in a race for fourth, which Madsen earned in the Keneric Racing KPC.

"This place is just unique, and we've come here so many times in the past and were so terrible and then one day figured it out," said Schatz, of Fargo, N.D. "These guys on this STP team do a phenomenal job and when it works it seems like it works at a lot of places."

Schatz made the pass for the lead on the top side of the track, and then extended his advantage by working the bottom groove. The victory was Schatz's third of the season, one behind points leader Daryn Pittman and Friday night winner Tim Kaeding.

"Just a hard fought battle with the Eyecon Trail Cameras car and we came up one spot short," said Dollansky, of Elk River, Minn. "We came home second tonight, but we'll keep working hard at things and keep plugging away."

Dollansky's team seems to be hitting its groove, earning a third-place finish on Friday night at Elko Speedway to go with his runner-up finish on Saturday. Brown's team also appears to be on the right track with the Casey's General Stores/FVP Maxim, clearly using Saturday's night performance as a measuring stick for where it believes it needs to be in August during the Nationals.

"We just got a little free as the race went on and could never do anything with him," said Brown, of Grain Valley, Mo. "Schatz is always good here and a good top three is nothing to hang your head about, but we definitely want to win."

Overall it was a busy night on the track. Kyle Larson earned the 24th position in the A-main after advancing 13 positions in the Last Chance Showdown. In the A-main, he continued to work his way forward, eventually finishing in the eighth position to earn the KSE Hard Charger Award.

Sammy Swindell, who won last season at Knoxville, posted quick time in qualifying and was on the move in the A-main, but damage to his Big Game Treestands car sustained on a restart forced him to the back of the field.

World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series points leader Daryn Pittman won the Last Chance Showdown then picked up his 18th top-10 finish in 21 races this season after finishing seventh, one spot behind his Kasey Kahne Racing teammate Cody Darrah.

Pittman owns a 130-point lead over Paul McMahan as the Outlaws head east for the Gettysburg Clash on Wednesday, May 15, at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., and Friday-Saturday, May 17-18 at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
